Sony Details PS4 PlayStation Plus Changes

Sony Details PS4 PlayStation Plus Changes

Sony has detailed the changes we can expect of the PS Plus subscription on the PS4. Auto-updates and the “social features of PS4″ will not require paid subscription to access. Catch-up TV and online movie services will be free for all PS4 users, although an additional cost may be required to access back-catalogue PS3 titles once the Gaikai stream service kicks off.

PS Plus subscription is required to to access PS4′s multiplayer functionality. This will allow Sony to focus both more time and effort on the PlayStation Network to reduce downtime and improve its performance.

“It is time to charge, but it is time to charge and still continue to deliver phenomenal value,” SCEE UK & Ireland MD Fergal Gara told VideoGamer.com during E3.

A PlayStation Plus subscriber for PlayStation 4 comes away with a hell of a lot. First of all, the subscription applies across all three platforms [PS4, PS3 & PS Vita], so if you have the three platforms then you have an instant game collection on all three. So that’s hugely powerful in its own right. But it is true to say that the online multiplayer element for PS4, you do require the subscription in order to [make use] of that.

“If you choose not to subscribe we are still gating relatively little in many senses, so access to online catch-up TV and online movie services sit outside of the gate, for example. The social features of PS4 and PS4 games sit out of the subscription service… things like auto-updates on PS4 sit outside of PlayStation Plus, so we’re trying to be as balanced and as fair as we possibly can. If you choose to pay the subscription, yes, you get one important element of modern-day gameplay, but you also get fantastic value in games, including the PlayStation Plus Edition of DriveClub.”

Auto-update functionality was previously only available for PS Plus subscribers. The social features haven’t been detailed as of now, so we don’t know what that’s referring to. It’s still undecided whether or not people needs to pay to access PS3 titles via Gaikai.

“In short, we haven’t decided,” said Gara when asked whether the firm plans to introduce additional PlayStation Plus tiers to accommodate backwards-compatibility streaming. “The Gaikai developments are exciting. The Remote Play feature which we’re particularly excited about not just benefits PS4 but PS Vita – that uses some Gaikai technology.

“But secondly, the full cloud gaming service comes a bit later – we announced that 2014 will start to see that introduced for PS3 titles in the US, and we’ll start to see a gradual increase in consoles, titles, devices and countries involved as we go forward, so there is a plan there to bring the PlayStation experience to more devices out of the cloud using the Gaikai that will broaden over time.”

“Will that be part of PlayStation Plus? I genuinely don’t know. Will that require some other, different charging mechanism? Perhaps. We just haven’t sat down to answer that question yet.”

ZoominGames interviewed the creative director of The Elder Scrolls Online game, Paul Sage, during E3. In the interview he discussed the one major difference between all of the different versions, not just the PS4 and Xbox One versions.

Sage believes that the only big difference is that of the control scheme and UI (user interface). Every platform is slightly different from each other, thus the game needs to altered slightly to fit.

Metal Gear Solid V Comes With User-Created Missions, "Vast" Multiplayer

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain will come with support for user-created missions and an online component. Hideo Kojima spoke about this both at E3 and to CVG. Speaking to the latter, Kojima talked about the game’s open-world and how he  wanted “to make sure that we were doing the most difficult and challenging thing.” He also discussed the use of devices such as tablets and smartphones.

“Using tablets and smart phones you can also enjoy Metal Gear Solid V and create user-generated missions within the world,” Kojima said. “That’s another reason we had to go open-world—if it was linear we wouldn’t be able to do that.”

The game’s online component is in development at Kojima Productions Los Angeles in co-operation with the Tokyo team. “We’re working closely to create a vast multiplayer for all the fans,” he said.

Kingdom Hearts III has been announced during E3. However, director Tetsuya Nomura believes the game was announced a little early.

The game is being developed on the Luminous engine with “over-specifications”, most likely in a PC environment. From there the game will be ported to both PS4 and Xbox One. A special l “Kingdom Shader” will also be used to give Sora and the rest, “visuals adjusted differently for each world to suit its motif.”

As you can see in the announcement trailer above, the last few scenes show some footage which we belied was actual gameplay. Nomura admitted it was not gameplay, but a movie. Due to time constraint they couldn’t prepare actual gameplay. However, he claims it  represents the “visual possibilities that are capable in real-time.”
